Last weekend we headed to Cafe Caju, a plant based, vegan cafe in Vitacura, Santiago .
We went for afternoon tea (or ‘onces’ as I’m told), but we’ll be sure to head back for lunch another time.
Everything served at Cafe Caju is dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, plant based and delicious. A lot of the menu is also suitable for celiacs and if you call in advance, they’ll prepare you gluten free pizzas and cakes to order.
I got my cake order wrong. I had my eye on a rather delicious red berry tart, but my poor Spanish got the better of me.
It could have been worse though. By accident (honest!) I actually ordered two slices of cheesecake. And of course it would have been rude to send it back…
Meanwhile my kid ordered the biggest, gooiest chocolate cake ever. It was dairy free, so he had no choice but to share it with his dairy intolerant brother.
There is a huge list of teas: green teas, afternoon teas, white teas … and they even know how to prepare a teapot properly. (This is a big deal coming from me).
There’s a cute seating area outside…
and I loved the calm interiors too.
Alas it wasn’t a particularly calm day. My kids were struggling without their usual afternoon siesta.
Again, apologies to the table next to us for the shouting and food fights. And thank you Cafe Caju for the colouring in, which kept them entertained so I could finally drink my tea in peace.
Need to know:
The outdoor seating area is not closed to the roadside, so if your kid is anything like as energetic as ours, you might prefer to sit indoors.
Cafe Caju is big, but it gets very busy on weekends. Best to book ahead.
There is a good offering of gluten free meals but for some cakes you need to order in advance.
Cafe Caju is open from Monday to Wednesday from 9am – 6pm, from Thursday to Saturday from 9am -10pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 9am -5pm.
Address: Av. Luis Pasteur 5337, Vitacura.
